The Football Association (FA) might consider waiting for Pep Guardiola to become available before appointing him as the new England manager, possibly opting for an interim manager in the meantime, according to a recent report.

Gareth Southgate recently announced his resignation as England’s head coach, just two days after the team’s 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. Mikel Oyarzabal’s late goal decided the match, leaving England as runners-up.

Several candidates are being considered as Southgate’s replacement, including Under-21 boss Lee Carsley, Graham Potter, and Mauricio Pochettino. However, Manchester City’s manager Pep Guardiola is also a key target for the FA.

The Independent reports that the FA is particularly impressed with Guardiola’s trophy-winning track record.

Guardiola’s contract with Manchester City expires in 2025, and there is speculation he might leave the club at the end of the upcoming season. This potential availability has made the FA keen to pursue him.

The FA might appoint Lee Carsley as an interim manager while waiting for Guardiola, similar to how Southgate initially took the role before becoming permanent.

Guardiola’s success with Manchester City, where he has won numerous domestic titles, makes him an attractive candidate for the England job.

The FA believes that an international management role could appeal to Guardiola as a new challenge after his successful club career.

Securing Guardiola would be a significant step for England as they prepare for the future, including the 2026 World Cup qualification process starting in March.

Having a manager of Guardiola’s caliber could be crucial for England’s success on the international stage.
