After a year away from football, Manchester United legend Edwin van der Sar has hinted at a possible return.
Following his retirement as a player, Van der Sar took on an executive role at Ajax, starting as the director of marketing in 2012, then moving to sporting CEO in 2015, and becoming head CEO in 2016.
However, after Erik ten Hag left for Manchester United, Ajax’s performance declined, prompting Van der Sar to announce his departure in the summer of 2023. Shortly afterward, he suffered a brain hemorrhage but has since fully recovered.
Van der Sar posted on Instagram, marking one year since his resignation from Ajax. He expressed gratitude for his time at the club, both as a player and CEO, and hinted at a possible limited return to football.
He wrote: “Today marks exactly one year since I stepped down as Ajax’s CEO. I am grateful for the warm farewell from my colleagues. Serving this club has been one of the greatest blessings of my life.
Despite the difficult times, which are inevitable, this period is filled with unique memories and wonderful people.
I had time to heal and reflect with my friends and family. New adventures and experiences are waiting for us in the near future. Thank you, everyone.”
Van der Sar is unlikely to return to Manchester United in an executive role, as Omar Berrada has recently been appointed by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe for this position.
Nevertheless, Van der Sar remains a beloved figure among United fans, thanks to his successful six-year tenure at Old Trafford.
