Transfer news journalist Ben Jacobs has clarified that there isn’t much substance to the rumors linking Liverpool duo Luis Diaz and Thiago Alcantara to Barcelona this summer.
In his Daily Briefing column for CaughtOffside, Jacobs explained that Liverpool has no plans to sell Diaz, and it’s unlikely that Barcelona can afford the Colombian international due to their Financial Fair Play constraints.
Diaz has been a crucial player for Liverpool, and fans need not be overly concerned about the Barcelona links. It’s more of a long-term aspiration for Diaz to play there, rather than something imminent or likely.
Regarding Alcantara, Jacobs noted that the veteran midfielder would prefer to stay in Europe after his contract with Liverpool ends, but he hasn’t yet decided on his next move.
Jacobs stated, “Liverpool want to keep Luis Diaz. He is contracted until 2027, and there are no plans to sell him this summer despite links to Barcelona.
Diaz has expressed a desire to play in Spain one day, as his father mentioned recently, but that is a long-term goal.
He has shown no intention to leave Liverpool now, and Barcelona can’t afford him without significant departures due to Financial Fair Play issues.”
Jacobs also mentioned potential Barcelona sales, highlighting Jules Kounde and Raphinha as possible assets to be sold, though neither wants to leave. Andreas Christensen and Ronald Araujo are also names to watch.
“Thiago Alcantara is still considering his options after leaving Liverpool. His priority is to stay in Europe. Although Saudi dealmakers tried to secure a pre-contract with him in January, they couldn’t persuade him to join the Saudi Pro League.
Barcelona has been linked with Thiago as well, but it’s too early to know his next move after leaving Liverpool,” Jacobs added.
