According to fresh reports from The Mirror, Manchester United are preparing a surprise move for Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister.
In what would rank among the most controversial deals in Premier League history, United are said to have placed the World Cup winner on their summer transfer shortlist. The Old Trafford hierarchy are reportedly planning changes in midfield, especially with Casemiro expected to move on.
Mac Allister linked with Liverpool exit amid United interest
Talk about Mac Allister’s future has grown after a mixed season under Arne Slot. Although he played an important role in Liverpool’s 2024/25 title-winning campaign, there are suggestions the Argentine could consider a new challenge.
Manchester United’s reported interest has caused plenty of reaction, but they are not alone. Real Madrid have also been strongly linked with the 27-year-old, with Spanish reports claiming the club see him as a long-term option in midfield.
Mac Allister has previously spoken about his ambition to play in La Liga one day, which could give Madrid an advantage over any English club interested in signing him.
A move to Manchester United seen as unlikely
Despite the rumours, a direct switch from Liverpool to Manchester United appears very unlikely. The rivalry between the two clubs is so intense that direct transfers are extremely rare.
Historically, both sides have preferred selling players abroad rather than strengthening each other. In fact, the last direct transfer between them was in 1964, when Phil Chisnall moved from United to Liverpool.
While players such as Michael Owen and Paul Ince have represented both clubs, they joined their rival only after playing for another team in between.
