Adam Wharton Reportedly Close to Reaching Agreement With Liverpool as Transfer and Contract Details Emerge

Liverpool’s reported move for Adam Wharton has been played down, with fresh insight also emerging over a potential blockbuster switch for Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers.

The Reds have been strongly linked with two England internationals in recent weeks, but a journalist has moved to cool claims that a deal for Wharton is close.

Liverpool are said to admire the Crystal Palace midfielder, who has impressed since his rise at Selhurst Park and is widely viewed as a player capable of thriving at Champions League level.

With Jean-Philippe Mateta expected to be Palace’s next major sale, Wharton is also tipped to attract serious interest in the summer.

However, reports suggesting Wharton has already agreed personal terms with Liverpool appear premature. In his GiveMeSport newsletter, Ben Jacobs dismissed talk of a five-year deal being in place, insisting Liverpool’s focus currently lies on other targets and positions.

Attention has instead shifted towards Aston Villa playmaker Morgan Rogers, who could be the subject of a headline-grabbing summer move. Jacobs suggested that if Liverpool bring in a midfielder this year, it is more likely to be someone who offers goals and versatility across wide areas, with Rogers fitting a profile admired inside the club.

Tottenham Hotspur are long-time admirers of Rogers, but their chances of landing him look slim given their struggles under Thomas Frank. While Liverpool have also endured an inconsistent spell under Arne Slot, they are believed to be in a stronger position than Spurs due to their recent success and historic appeal.

Villa, for their part, are under no pressure to sell. Previous reports indicate Rogers could cost around £80m, though a fee closer to £100m would not be surprising. The England international is tied to a long-term contract running until June 2031, strengthening Villa’s hand.

Whether Rogers pushes for a move remains to be seen. Unai Emery’s side are flying in the league, sitting 10 points clear of Liverpool, but their last major trophy dates back to the 1996 League Cup.

As for Wharton, Liverpool are still expected to keep tabs on the 21-year-old, especially if there is a managerial change at Anfield, with Xabi Alonso previously linked as a potential successor to Slot.
