Due to Kostas Tsimikas’ fractured collarbone, Liverpool has adjusted its priorities for the January transfer window, placing a higher emphasis on acquiring a defender.
Tsimikas sustained the injury during the Arsenal match when he collided with Bukayo Saka, accidentally bumping into Jurgen Klopp, who was on the touchline. Post-match, Saka expressed regret, and Klopp confirmed Tsimikas’ extended absence due to the injury.
Andy Robertson, Liverpool’s primary left-back, also faced injury concerns while playing for Scotland, necessitating surgery. Although a return for Robertson is expected in January, Tsimikas’ extended absence has prompted the club to seek defensive reinforcements.
Reports from The Mirror indicate Liverpool’s intention to pursue a defender during the January transfer window, considering injuries to other defensive players like Joel Matip, potentially sidelined for the entire season due to an ACL injury.
Given the team’s injury woes, Liverpool aims to secure a versatile defender capable of providing support across various defensive positions, akin to Joe Gomez’s adaptability. Manager Klopp is eyeing Goncalo Inacio, a 22-year-old defender from Sporting Lisbon, who has showcased versatility by featuring at both left-back and center-back positions.
Inacio, who recently made his debut for Portugal, is admired by Liverpool for his adaptability, having scored twice in five games this year. However, the Reds must negotiate with Sporting, with Inacio’s release clause set at €60 million. As of now, no official approach has been made, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
Liverpool’s transfer plans have been hampered by injuries, but Klopp is hopeful of new arrivals next month to bolster the squad for Europa League participation and sustain their challenge for the championship.
