“Let our player go, he won’t remain at your club indefinitely. We desire his return,” – The conflict between Manchester United and Getafe supporters is on the brink of intensifying as Getafe issues a statement regarding Mason Greenwood’s transfer following Man Utd’s ‘return decision’.

Mason Greenwood, currently on loan at Getafe from Manchester United, has significantly contributed to Getafe’s rise into the top half of La Liga during his season-long loan. President Angel Corres of Getafe is adamant about retaining the forward at the end of his loan period despite growing transfer speculation.

Initially anticipated to be part of Ten Hag’s plans at Manchester United this season, Greenwood’s circumstances changed due to both internal and external factors. Since joining Getafe, he has been gradually regaining form, recording four goals and three assists in his first 13 appearances. His performances have attracted interest from various European clubs, including Lazio and Real Sociedad.

Greenwood’s move to Spain happened on transfer deadline day after a reversal by then-Chief Executive Richard Arnold, retracting his decision to reintegrate him into Erik ten Hag’s squad. While Greenwood is reportedly enjoying his time in Madrid, Getafe aims to extend his stay beyond the upcoming summer.

President Corres expressed the club’s intentions not only to extend Greenwood’s loan but also to secure his permanent signing. However, reports indicate Manchester United’s firm decision to support Greenwood’s career elsewhere instead of offering him an opportunity at Old Trafford.

Greenwood remains under contract at Manchester United until 2025, but uncertainties arise following Arnold’s recent departure, questioning whether a new sporting department led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe will adopt a different stance.

Despite Getafe’s interest in retaining Greenwood, Manchester United aims to secure a transfer fee for his signature, with two more transfer windows available after his loan spell at Getafe. While content in Spain, Greenwood’s interest from clubs regularly competing in European tournaments might influence his future as he seeks to regain his prior form before his arrest in January 2022.

Following charges of attempted rape, assault, and controlling and coercive behavior, Greenwood denied these accusations. However, after key witnesses withdrew, the Crown Prosecution Service discontinued the charges in February this year, prompting a six-month internal investigation by Manchester United. Arnold announced his satisfaction with Greenwood’s innocence, leading to his move away from Old Trafford’s spotlight, deemed the best outcome for all parties involved. It appears likely that his departure from Manchester United will become permanent next year.
